Commitment to Betterment: My Post-Hospital Routine

Have I mentioned that I do not give up? No little impediment like being non-responsive (or having ten+ strokes, my heart stop, or vomiting every day) is going to stop me. I am in this for the long haul. It is me against past me and I will try to be better every day, week, and month.

So, naturally, since I have been out of the hospital, 56 hours so far, has included:

  • daily meditation for 20 minutes
  • attended my church men’s group where I met someone who might help with my book
  • daily PT, OT, and chiropractor exercises
  • started speech therapy exercises, including my fave Expiratory Muscle Strength Trainer
  • did 2-1/2 hours of OT, lot of stretching mobility
  • got right back into PT with sit to stand, 2 sets of ten half squats, and 2 sets of 88 feet with my walker
  • financial planner meeting to talk about next steps, allocations, and draw down strategy
  • met with Sam, my personal trainer, for our first unsupervised session. He kicked my butt for an hour
  • went out tonight to hear a friend play jazz at Slackers Brewing
  • going out this weekend for next Austin FC home game
  • going to church Sunday
  • maybe going Sunday to a guitar concert at Slackers. Anybody want to come?
  • going out Sunday for Funny Girl
  • maybe cooking dinner Sunday
Did electronic stimulation for my wrist extension, finger extension, elbow flexion and extension, and shoulder raise. This is the elbow work. It does not hurt much, but it is tiring.

Life is going well.

  1. What a wonderful post, Rob. From my own medical journey I can relate to the “me against past me” betterment thing. Also I’m highly motivated by finding workarounds so I can get back to what I love — whether seeing people, being in nature, cooking, writing… You’re obviously really good at finding workarounds so you can live your best life. It’s problem solving, right? What any good programmer loves to do. Cheers to you, inspiring friend!

  2. I especially liked all the sentences that had the word “going”!
Sounds like you get out way more than I do, and I need to get better about that: so PLEASE keep me in mind as an evening-or-weekends chauffeur. Driving you is fun, and it’d be a fantastic excuse for me to both get out the house, and to visit you! Pretty sure I can shift my work hours a bit to make it work, if needed 🙂
